We are very sorry to hear of the death of our friend and colleague Mary Parkinson who died on 10 December 2017.

Mary was an amazing ambassador for Action on Addiction. She worked tirelessly to raise the charity’s profile and generate funds in support of our life-saving work. Whilst she was acutely aware that addiction had never been a fashionable field for fundraising, Mary had the courage and determination to stand up against the stigma surrounding this life-stopping condition. As a beloved member of our fundraising team, Mary raised significant sums of money for the charity, and was the driving force behind much of the celebrity endorsement that Action on Addiction received over many years.

Having celebrated being clean since 17 October 1990, Mary will be particularly remembered for her generosity of spirit and for all the help she gave to people suffering in active addiction, as well as the support she gave to those in active recovery.

Mary’s mother Ann, Lady Parkinson, founded Action on Addiction (one of three organisations which merged to form the current charity) in 1989, and remains an active supporter, and President of the charity to this day. Mary’s father Cecil, the late Lord Parkinson, was also President of the charity prior to his death in January 2016.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary’s family at this difficult time.
