Our People
There are approximately 150 people employed with Action on Addiction, plus many dedicated volunteers who help us on a regular basis with our fundraising and other events. Our staff are based in our sites in Merseyside, London, Wiltshire and Dorset.
As our name suggests, we take Action on Addiction and our combined team of researchers, nurses, doctors, psychiatrists, family therapists, volunteers and counsellors take action every day to achieve our vision which is people free from addiction.
Chair - Dominic Casserley
Dominic Casserley is the Chair of Action on Addiction and the Managing Partner of the UK and Ireland practices of McKinsey & Company. He joined McKinsey in New York in 1983 and spent 12 years serving financial institution clients in the US. At the end of 1994 he moved to Hong Kong to lead McKinsey's Greater China practice.
He moved to London from Hong Kong at the end of 1999 to be leader of the Firm's European Banking & Securities practice before becoming managing partner of the UK in 2003.
Dominic has undertaken various pro bono projects. In New York he was a David Rockefeller Fellow from 1991 to 1992. He served on the Board of the Manhattan Theatre Club from 1991 to 1994. In 1999, he assisted the Asia Society set its strategies in Hong Kong and New York. He is on the Board of the Donmar Theatre in London.
Prior to joining McKinsey, Dominic spent more than 3 years with Morgan Grenfell & Company, a British merchant bank, working in both its investment management and merger and acquisition groups.
He read history at Cambridge University, where he was also President of the Cambridge Union Society. He is married with three children.
Joint Chief Executive - Nick Barton
Nick Barton, the Joint Chief Executive of Action on Addiction, was formerly Chief Executive of Clouds. Nick Barton, who has a Masters degree in clinical psychology and trained as a psychotherapist and family therapist, has worked in the addiction field for more than 20 years.
Under Nick's leadership, Clouds expanded to provide a range of residential and day treatment and rehabilitation services, as well as specialist assistance to families, including most recently, children affected by substance misusing parents. Under Nick's stewardship, Clouds has become a leading provider of Addictions Counsellors to the field, teaching degree-level courses in partnership with the University of Bath. Nick was a founding member and former chairman of the European Association for the Treatment of Addiction and recently retired as a Trustee. He was a member of the Mental Health Committee of the Independent Healthcare Association and recently retired as a Trustee of the Nelson Trust. He was a long-standing member of the Psychiatric and Substance Misuse Committee of the Independent Healthcare Association.
He has helped set up treatment centres abroad, written articles, devised and delivered workplace training, spoken at conferences, sat on an array of advisory panels and contributed to books on addiction, most recently The British System edited by Professors John Strang and Michael Gossop.
Joint Chief Executive - Lesley King-Lewis
Lesley King-Lewis is the Joint Chief Executive of Action on Addiction, formerly Chief Executive of Action on Addiction (AonA) which was the only independent UK research charity dedicated to finding new ways to prevent and treat substance abuse.
After graduating from Williams College Mass USA (BA) and London School of Economics (MSc) she joined Barclays Bank International (Graduate Training Programme). Lesley spent nine years with Barclays including two overseas assignments, Johannesburg and New York where she spent 5 years in the Real Estate Division as a Vice President.
She then moved into the voluntary sector, spending six years as Development Director at the National Art Collections Fund.
Lesley is also a trustee for the British Museum Friends, Wigmore Hall, the Barbican and the Alcohol Education Research Centre. She lives in London and has two children.
