Action on Addiction Expands Women’s Treatment to Meet Growing Demand for Drink and Drug Services

28 April 2009

Action on Addiction is pleased to announce the expansion and relocation of its women-only service due to increased demand.  Hope House is a pioneering female-only second stage residential centre for women in London.

"There is a great shortage of women-only treatment services in the UK and as Hope House celebrates its 20th year in providing specialist support for women with addiction problems we are glad to be expanding our services to meet demand," says Amanda Williams, Director, Action on Addiction.

"We have seen a big increase in the number of women presenting at our primary treatment centre Clouds House with drug and alcohol problems. During the first 3 months of this year 47% of clients admitted to Clouds House have been female - during the same period 5 years ago it was 29%.

The new Hope House has been relocated and will provide a temporary home for 23 women, increasing from an 8-bed unit. It will continue to provide high quality addiction treatment, giving women the time and space to work on issues that may underpin their vulnerability to relapse, such as abuse, eating disorders and self-harm issues.

The programme takes a holistic approach to treatment focusing on the psychological, emotional, physical and educational needs of clients and is underpinned by the 12-Step abstinence-based model.  Art therapy and reflexology are also included to support and complement the treatment programme which lasts between 12 and 24 weeks depending on individual need.

This Saturday, April 25th Laetitia Maklouf, author of The Virgin Gardener is re-designing the Hope House garden with the help of a team of volunteers from the RBS focused womens network.
