Action on Addiction's Reponse to the 24-Hour Licensing Law Review

04 March 2008

"Getting beaten up because you've had a few too many drinks is only half the story," says Bob Patton, Researcher from the Action on Addiction Alcohol Campaigning Group

"With the review of the 24 hour licensing law focusing on violence and crime, we are keen to highlight the long-term health implications of drinking too much - you are putting yourself at risk of over 100 health conditions."

"The introduction of the new licensing law has not shown the dramatic decline in alcohol consumption that was hoped for.  Currently the licensing act itself does not take into account the public health agenda but simply focuses on crime and disorder issues and we would like to see the health agenda considered as part of this act."

Background Information

Action on Addiction's research carried out by Bob Patton showed no discernable impact of the licensing law change on A&E admissions, reinforcing the suggestion that the policy change has not produced the intended reduction in alcohol related health problems.

Action on Addiction is working to disarm addiction through research, treatment, family support and education.
