Family and Friends Support Groups
Being related to, living with or working with an alcohol or drug dependent person can be extremely distressing and painful.
However, when families seek outside help they quickly learn that they do not have to find all the answers, that recovery for the addict is not their responsibility - all they really need is to take care of themselves.
In time families and friends learn they are not to blame and freeing themselves of a huge burden are able gradually to improve the quality of their lives.
The Family/Friends Support Groups set out to help those family members and friends who would like help in achieving that aim.
Who are they for?
Any relative, partner or friend of someone who has or has had a drink or drug problem.
What are they for?
To offer support, develop awareness and insight and to improve coping skills, by changing attitudes and behaviour.
Who runs them?
Experienced counsellors facilitate the groups.
How much do they cost?
Nothing, as the costs are covered by a grant.
Do I need to attend every session?
No, but regular attendance keeps up the momentum and therefore improves the effectiveness.
What happens?
Time is given for everyone to say how he or she is feeling, how they have been coping and support is offered where needed. The rest of the evening is taken up in discussing specific topics such as how addiction affects everyone, anger management, how to step back by setting firmer boundaries, building self-esteem etc.
What do I do if I want to attend?
Please telephone us so we can arrange for you to meet with the counsellor before the start of the evening. At your first meeting you will be asked to complete a brief assessment form, for record keeping and evaluation purposes. This information is kept strictly confidential.
