Managing Recruitment and Selection 2 – 3 July 2012 Apply

12 Step (AS10011): 28 May - 1 June 2012 Apply

This unit examines the history of the 12 Step movement world-wide, and the current availability in the UK. The central ideas of 12 Step recovery are debated, and how the 12 Step programme has been promoted by professional treatment is analysed. Evidence concerning the usefulness of 12 step fellowships and other forms of social support is evaluated, and a model of 12 Step facilitation presented.

Group Therapy (AS10013): 12 - 16 March 2012

This unit provides a clear model and rationale for Interpersonal Group Therapy, which helps clients explore how they relate to others, how this changes when they are no longer using alcohol or other drugs, and helps them learn more satisfying ways of meeting their needs in relationships. This powerful way of working could be described as 'Interpersonal Relapse Prevention', as we know that many relapses happen in the context of conflict with others or feeling lonely and cut off from others. The unit provides conceptual clarity and an understanding of the tasks of a group facilitator.

Introduction to Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention - one day workshops 24 February 2012 (Warminster) and 23 March 2012 (Chester)

Action on Addiction and Dr. Amanda Kinsella are proud to present an Introduction to Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention. This practical one day workshop will assist clinicians in their understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of this innovative model.   The current research base will be explored, as will implications for practice. The day will provide attendees with a chance to experience the model in action by participating in exercises and how this can be integrated into existing Relapse Prevention programs.

Training opportunities and pathways to becoming an MBRP facilitator will also be explored.

For further information, please see this leaflet.

Harm Reduction (AS10286): 20 - 22 February 2012

This unit looks at the history of the Harm Reduction movement, and examines the range of services that have been set up in the United Kingdom to minimise drug and alcohol related harm. The relationship with abstinence-based services is debated.

Dual Diagnosis (AS20022): 16 - 18 January 2012

People with mental illness are particularly vulnerable to substance misuse. This unit aims to help students understand this vulnerability and explore promising interventions for assisting this client group with their drug/alcohol problems.

Developing Motivational Interviewing - Honours (AS30182): 28 November - 1 December 2011

This unit is only available to those who have successfully completed the Addictions Counselling Foundation Degree or have attended an introductory MI training.
Enabling students to build on their knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, this unit aims to offer opportunities for assessed skills practice and reflection on the utility of the approach in various settings and situations.

Motivational Interviewing (AS20174): 21 - 25 November 2011

This unit is concerned with the development of the necessary knowledge, skills and techniques required to motivate clients to change addictive behaviours. Supporting the practical element of this module is the associated research evidence which underpins the techniques used in the above processes. Students are shown how to use this information to inform and develop their clinical practice within the workplace.
