This is the Charity’s new blog providing insights into the addictions field. We hope you will find it interesting and thought provoking

Whole Lotta Love

What is it that makes a “good addictions treatment”?

This is like asking what makes a good meal. In order to answer that question you will need to consider whether it is nourishing and if the eating experience is rewarding. Clearly the relationship between these elements can sometimes be skewed, as sometimes food that is not nourishing can be attractive – or food that is very nourishing can be most unappealing. However, for the purposes of this analogy I will assume that what is being sought is something that is both nourishing and delicious.

So what is needed?

• an effective recipe, that can be replicated by others
• the best quality ingredients
• someone who knows how to prepare and cook them
• the right environment (usually a kitchen)
• a suitable dining area
• good presentation and service

If all of these elements come together in the right way then you may have produced an “experience” to be remembered. However, there is something else which will elevate it to something special; the care and attention to detail and the genuine desire for excellence. People who take it to this level love to do it; and that love becomes one of the ingredients that the recipients ingest.

Good addictions treatment, like a good meal, needs the right ingredients prepared by the right people in the right environment – served with love.
