Action on Addiction statement about Eva Rausing

11 July 2012

MEDIA STATEMENT: 11 July 2012

Action on Addiction statement about Eva Rausing

Commenting in response to the death of Action on Addiction supporter, donor and former Trustee, Eva Rausing, Nick Barton, Chief Executive of Action on Addiction, today (11 July 2012) said:

"Everyone involved with Action on Addiction is devastated to hear the news of Eva Rausing’s untimely death.

“Eva worked tirelessly for years, without any desire for public recognition and despite her own health issues, to help people and charities in the addiction field through her wonderfully generous support, both as a trustee and a donor.

“Donations from the Eva and Hans K Rausing Trust were, amongst other things, directed towards our Charity Funded Treatment programme, which funds people through addiction treatment at Clouds House, Hope House or our SHARP day programmes who could otherwise not afford it or gain access via the state system.  We are enormously grateful to Eva and her husband Hans for their generous support, helping us to establish much needed programmes of work to help in our mission to disarm addiction.

“During her time as a trustee, which ended in 2003, it was easy to work with her as she was intelligent, conscientious and totally committed. We are incredibly shocked at this devastating news, and offer our deepest sympathy to Eva’s family at this time of great loss."

Notes to Editors:

About Eva Rausing’s involvement with Action on Addiction
Eva Rausing was a Trustee of Clouds (one of three charities that merged to form Action on Addiction in 2007) from August 1996 until February 2003. She was also a trustee of CDC, from 1995 until 2003. She was elected as co-Patron in October 2003, a role she served until the merger of the charities on 31 March 2007.

The Eva & Hans K Rausing Trust has contributed generously to the addiction field over the last 20 years. Their donations to Action on Addiction have helped establish its Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies and supporting the work of its other divisions, including Families Plus.

About Action on Addiction
Action on Addiction is the only UK charity working across the addiction field in research, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, professional workforce development, professional education and support for families and children.

One in three people suffer from an addiction. It breaks up families, damages communities and destroys lives. In some way it touches us all. At Action on Addition we believe that it is important to take an integrated and dynamic approach to improving the understanding of addiction and people’s responses to it.

Action on Addiction has treatment centres throughout England as well as a specialist family support service and an expert training centre for the treatment of addiction. We fund important and innovative research into addiction, working closely with the National Addiction Centre (part of the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London) and the Mental Health Research and Development Unit at the University of Bath.

Action on Addiction has been helping people with addiction problems for over 25 years. In January 2012 HRH the Duchess of Cambridge became patron of Action on Addiction.
