Family and Friends Support Groups in Wiltshire

59-1column.jpgBeing related to, living with or working with an alcohol or drug dependent person can be extremely distressing and painful.

However, when families seek outside help they quickly learn that they do not have to find all the answers, that recovery for the addicted person is not their responsibility - all they really need is to take care of themselves.

In time families and friends learn they are not to blame and freeing themselves of a huge burden are able gradually to improve the quality of their lives.

The Family/Friends Support Groups set out to help those family members and friends who would like help in achieving that aim.  It is not necessary for your family member/friend to be in treatment in order to benefit from attending the support groups.

Who are they for?

Any relative, partner or friend of someone who has or has had a drink or drug problem.

What are they for?

To offer support, develop awareness and insight and to improve coping skills, by changing attitudes and behaviour.

Who runs them?

Experienced counsellors facilitate the groups.

How much do they cost?

Currently the costs for Wiltshire support groups are covered by a grant, but please check this with us when applying.

Do I need to attend every session?

Regular attendance improves its effectiveness, review meetings will be arranged to ensure you are receiving the right support you require at that time.

What happens?

Time is given for everyone to say how he or she is feeling, how they have been coping and support is offered where needed. The rest of the evening is taken up in discussing specific topics such as how addiction affects everyone, anger management, how to step back by setting firmer boundaries, building self-esteem etc.

What do I do if I want to attend?

Please complete the referral form and send to us by post, email, or fax.  Alternatively, you can phone us and we will complete the form with you over the phone.  You will then be offered an assessment appointment with one of our trained counsellors before you can join a support group.
