Training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Courses

Action on Addiction provides distinctive, exceptional training to organisations and individuals, supporting practice in the addictions and other related fields.

If the course is accredited by The University of Bath, students can attend the Centre from the EU, if the course is not accredited, we welcome students from any country.

Introduction to Assessment

Course dates: 16 to 20 January 2017
Registration by: 20 December 2016
Course fee: £700 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).
 
Overview: This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the importance of the needs and risk assessment processes in addiction treatment. The teaching covers the main principles of needs and risk assessment, models of assessment, how to carry out an effective assessment, the relationship between needs & risk & the collaborative process between the practitioner, client and other agencies.  A combination of teaching methods are used to maximise student learning.

Entry requirements: Due to the level this course is taught at, previous experience of working with addiction is required. You may be required to discuss your experience and existing knowledge with the unit tutor.

Assignment: you will be required to complete a 2,400 word assignment in accordance with University of Bath regulations. Successful completion of the assignment will earn you 6 ECTS credits with the University of Bath.

Student group: you will be attending this course alongside foundation degree students of the Addictions Counselling degree programme, accredited by the University of Bath. Degree students are required to attend this unit as part of their studies in addictions counselling. Please be aware this course is taught at degree level.  

Location: This course is taught on-site at The Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies based in Warminster, Wiltshire, UK.

Facilities provided: tea, coffee and biscuits are provided throughout the day. Lunch is not provided – please bring your own lunch. Introduction to Treatment Planning

Course dates: 30 January - 1 Feb 2017
Registration by: 30 December 2016
Course fee: £500 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).
Overview:  This course examines the link between assessment and treatment planning and the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the client to maximise their motivation in the process and responsibility for change. Treatment planning tools are explored and key principles are examined and reinforced.

Managing Performance

Course dates: 20-21 Feb 2017
Registration by: 20 Jan 2017
Course fee: £400 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).
Overview:  Ideal for any manager working in the health and social care sector, this course explores how performance can be managed to support safe and effective practice, meet legislative requirements and good practice guidance, as well as maintaining the wellbeing of individuals and teams.
 
Entry requirements: This course is appropriate for any individual currently working as a manager or new to management in the addictions or other related sectors. You may be required to discuss your experience and existing knowledge with the unit tutor.

Assignment: you will be required to complete a 2,000 word assignment in accordance with University of Bath regulations. Successful completion of the assignment will earn you 3 ECTS credits with the University of Bath.

Student group: you will be attending this course alongside foundation degree students of the Addictions Counselling degree programme, accredited by the University of Bath. Diversity issues in Addictions Treatment

Course dates: 27 February – 1 March 2017
Registration by: 1 February 2017
Course fee: £500 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).

Overview:  Students will develop a greater awareness of issues associated with human difference, which must be considered when working with individual clients in an addictions treatment or related setting. This course will explore a range of diverse groups within our society, examining their specific needs as well as exploring self-identify and stigma.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Course dates: 13-17 March 2017
Registration by: 17 February 2017
Course fee: £700 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).

Overview: In this 5 day course, students are introduced to the key concepts of motivational interviewing and its application to behaviour change. Students will have an opportunity to demonstrate competence in the practical application of MI and will develop an understanding of the key research evidence for the effectiveness of the model. Students will also explore their own competence in this model, reflecting on practice and identifying personal areas for growth.

Interpersonal Group Therapy

Course dates: 3-7 April 2017
Registration by: 3 March 2017
Course fee: £700 (includes fee for accreditation with the University of Bath).

Overview:  This course looks at the relevance of interpersonal learning in addictions treatment and introduces students to the theoretical and practical aspects of Irvin Yalom’s model of group therapy. Students will be supported to develop group facilitation skills and required to evaluate the supporting evidence of group therapy, understanding the modifications needed to use the model effectively with addicted clients.

Dual Diagnosis (DD)

Course dates: 24-26 April 2017

Overview: Explore the complex relationship of Mental illness & Addiction to enable an understanding of how to assist this vulnerable client base with their drug/alcohol issues.

Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP)

This on-line course is now running, for more information & how to book please visit the online learning page.

Ideal for any person working with clients experiencing the effects of addiction, MBRP has as its centre a non-judgmental and compassionate approach. This on-line course will support students to understand the theory and research which underpins MBRP practice, which are intended to foster increased awareness of relapse triggers, habitual patterns, and seemingly “automatic” reactions that often feel as though they control our lives.


Counselling Skills for Working with Substance Misuse

Join other professionals on this distinctive course and learn how to effectively use counselling skills in practice when working with addiction.

Accommodation costs:  We are able to provide bed and breakfast accommodation at our training centre at a rate of £35.00 pppn for a shared bathroom, £40.00 pppn for ensuite.  For 5 day courses, you can arrive and stay on Sunday free of charge. We can also offer a half board rate for summer schools. Please contact the CATS team for more information and to book accommodation.

Travel:  Travel arrangements are the responsibility of the student.

Terms:  Each course has a required minimum number of students in order to run.  If we do not reach the required number by the closing date, the course may be cancelled.
