Full-Time Foundation Degree Programme

Foundation Degree in Addictions Counselling

This programme aims to meet the increased demand for capable practitioners in the addictions and other related fields.  It enables students who are interested in working in the field of addictions treatment to become skilled, reflective and competent counsellors.

The Foundation degree is a franchised programme* of the University of Bath and is signposted to FDAP (The Federation of Drug and Alcohol Practitioners) and DANOS (Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards).  This means that holders of the University of Bath Foundation Degree in Addictions Counselling can become certified by FDAP as Accredited Practitioners before entering employment.

Application process

Applications must be submitted via UCAS for September 2017.  The closing date for applications is 30 June 2017, although we encourage early applications whenever possible.

Entry Requirements

Click here for the current entry requirements.

Those applicants who have had addiction problems themselves should ideally have a minimum of three years of stable recovery before starting the course, however two years will be considered.

As the course involves work with vulnerable adults, successful applicants will also be required to apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service for disclosure of any criminal record. The offer of a placement for the full-time course will be conditional on the receipt of a satisfactory disclosure certificate and appropriate risk assessment.

Selection process

Applicants who have met the entry requirements for the degree programme are required to attend a 2 day selection process. The selection process includes a number of 1:1 and group exercises and a homework assignment. The process is designed to assess applicant’s interpersonal and counselling skills and academic ability.

Following the selection process recommendations for acceptance on to the degree programme are made by the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies to the University of Bath. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection process by the University of Bath.

Selection days are held in April and May each year. An additional selection day may be held in July for late applications.

Teaching Timetable

For a guide of the time spent in teaching/work experience please see current timetable.  The Foundation Degree has 2 Stages. Each Stage contains a number of Units. The Units are taught in 3, 4 and 5 day blocks at our Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies in Warminster.

The Work Placement

The full-time programme is a work-based learning degree and therefore requires that you be in an approved placement.  Teaching is normally delivered in five day blocks at our training centre in Warminster so we recommend that students find a placement near their residence as more time will be spent in placement as the course progresses. Students will observe the treatment tasks modelled by qualified staff and receive direction and help in carrying out the tasks themselves. Wherever possible, students are allocated a placement in their preferred geographical location.

Honours Degree

Following graduation from the Foundation Degree students meeting the required criteria may have the opportunity to study for a further one year, full time. Successful completion leads to a BSc (Hons) in Addictions Counselling awarded by the University of Bath.
